Rtech (Pty) Ltd- registration no: 2015/31/16884/07 is a start-up company based in Melrose Arch which aims to play a role in reforming education through technology in the African continent.
The first project that the company has embarked on is to create a Maths application software called beta-SigmaX which will enable learners, educators and ordinary people to visualise and better understand maths. Most importantly learn it in a fun way using their phones, tablets and personal computers. The software creates graphics based on real life world examples to create a practical and in-depth understanding of maths concepts. It will initially be targeted to school learners from grade 6 – grade 12, however anyone who has the curiosity and appetite for learning mathematics at any stage of their life can download it, the earlier the grade the better.
South Africa is ranked by the World Bank as an upper middle income economy and second biggest in Africa succeeding Nigeria. Notwithstanding the afore-stated, South Africa still experiences unprecedented levels of poverty, income inequality and structural unemployment. This is largely occasioned by the historic past as well as the systematic failure to produce the labour force with requisite skills necessary to commensurate to job opportunities, given current evolving global technological enhancement and innovations. and appetite for learning mathematics at any stage of their life can download it, the earlier the grade the better.
The World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Index placed South African Education 146th out of 148 countries and placed our Mathematics and Science competencies in the 2015/2016 as 140 out of 140 countries. In addition to the above a large number of learners are dropping out of pure maths or generally have a negative attitude towards it. It is against this background that we decided to create beta-SigmaX and play a role by creating an application that will make maths interesting and fun!
